Literacy Consultation & Guidance
Understand your child's literacy development and feel confident about what to do next.
At Dyslexia Barcelona we know that not every child needs a formal assessment straight away. Sometimes, parents need an opportunity to discuss their concerns, understand their child's literacy skills and work out how best to support them.
A parent consultation offers personalised guidance for families who have questions or concerns about their child's literacy skills and development. It can be particularly helpful when there is a family history of dyslexia, concerns about reading or spelling, or uncertainty about whether further support or assessment may be appropriate.
What does the consultation involve?
The consultation begins with a short parent questionnaire, followed by a 45-minute online meeting. We will discuss your child's developmental and literacy history, their experiences of learning to read, the languages they are exposed to and the concerns you have noticed.
Together, we will explore appropriate next steps and consider how to support literacy development in a positive, practical and evidence-informed way.
Following the consultation, you will receive a personalised written summary with:
Key points discussed and areas to monitor.
Practical strategies to support early literacy at home.
Suggestions for keeping reading positive and manageable.
Recommended resources relevant to your child's age and language experience.
Guidance on when further support or a formal assessment may be appropriate.
Who is this service for?
Parent consultations may be particularly helpful for families who:
Have a family history of dyslexia and want to be proactive.
Have concerns about their child's reading or spelling skills.
Are supporting a child who is learning to read in more than one language.
Are unsure whether their child needs additional support or a formal assessment.
Would like practical guidance while their child continues to develop their literacy skills.
When is a formal assessment appropriate?
A full diagnostic dyslexia assessment is not always appropriate in the earliest stages of literacy development. The timing depends on the child's age, educational experience, literacy development and the evidence available.
A consultation can help parents understand what to look out for and consider appropriate next steps. It does not replace a diagnostic assessment or establish whether a child has dyslexia.
